The three most influential
communications of technologies that have been in my life are
Facebook, Etsy, and Phantasy Tour. Technology has opened many doors
for people but, it also has disabled some people from moving forward.
Facebook is my number one
communications of technology because it has enabled me to join a new
world. I cannot count how many great people and opportunities has
arrived because of my networking on Facebook. Not only has it
enabled me to keep in touch with people that I know from my past but
it has allowed me to meet great people as well. I am part of many
groups on this site. One group I take part in in called Black Milk
East Coast. This is a group of people who have brought many clothes
from a small australian business. We have helped the company become
huge. It feels great to be able to help a small company, for many
reasons. It helps me realize if I ever want to help my students or
myself I can do it via social media. I have also had classes that
made Facebook groups and this helped me and other class mates to talk
and share ideas. I plan to use some type of social media such as
this in my class. One downside to Facebook is that everyones
information is out there. There is no protection for personal
information. When we sign up for these websites we all check off the
box without reading and it is not okay. There needs to be an
understanding from everyone that whatever goes on the internet is up
there for the world to see.
Etsy is second on my list of
communications technology because it has opened up many artists to a
new way of getting there pieces out into the world. For people like
me who are working and go to school it is very hard to work street
fairs and events such as that. Etsy allows me to purchase other
peoples art and give them a chance. It helps get art out all over
the world. There are negatives to everything and one big problem
with Etsy is that people can steal ideas. I know from taking many
art classes that my teachers say it okay to rip off ideas. It is
okay to use the technique but not the exact idea.
Phantasy Tour is another
communications site that I use, it is also known as PT. This is a
forum in which people communicate about certain jam bands. The forum
helps people do ride share, make new friends, and discuss about
shows. This is not something that I could tell students to use but
it has opened my friendships up to people cross country. Many people
who follow the events are dedicated and will go to as many events as
possible. There have been times when I have helped people out and
given them rides to shows and also booking flights. This site has
allowed me to go to colorado with people meet on the forum. I have
not had any negative experience on this site thus far. I know not
everyone is in it for the good and there could be some potential
problems. Socially this has opened me up into a new world and it
allows me to see the good in people who are making friendships with
people in the same interest area. This site allows me to also feel
comfortable at shows and venus in which I am not familiar. It is
always nice to see a similar face. Without this site I would have
missed out on many experiences.
There are many pros and
cons of the internet and social media. Fortunately I have had
fantastic experiences so far. Social media has been very helpful to
my life. Social media is very important and needs to be taught
inside the classroom. Students need to learn to use it as a tool
instead of something that can destroy them. Communications
technologies have opened my life up to some great times. It also
truly helps for anyone who is trying to get there name out there or
start a business, or even help one.
I agree with social media could be potentially powerful, For example many people I know were able to accomplish projects they envisioned with kickstarter.
ReplyDeleteone current example of social media helping a good cause is the case of Glen James in Boston, the man who returned a backpack with approximately 42,000 of cash and traveler’s checks to the police, inspired Ethan Whittington to set up and online fund raise (http://www.gofundme.com/4by2as) to reward his honorable act, two days ago the funds went up to 104,000 and we are still counting!
I am also with you, that people steal ideas through Etsy, or other medias, but that is what it takes if you want your work to be out there. People will steal ideas regardless. If you have an absolute genious idea or technique maybe the solution is spending some money to patent it. ☺ As far as I know an artist in the United States has the copyright of the work from the moment of its creation, and it endures for 70 years after the artist’s death.
I liked the approach you took with your writing.
