Technology Integration Plan

This matrix that I have made up comes from a lesson plan from an ELL class I took about a year ago. This lesson plan is about having students identify, create, and critique t-shirts. This was chosen because I worked with this lesson plan prior to this class and I am familiar with it, it was also perfect format for creating a matrix for it. This matrix consist of eight rows. This matrix is a break down on what will happen during the lesson plan. It shows the technologies, standards and the actions/ strategies that will be happening.
The first row is explaining how the students will identify and discuss about the elements of design. This is important because in order for students to move forward with the lesson they must know the basic elements. The second row is understanding the elements that they have already picked out in the first row. This will be held as a group discussion and Me (the teacher) will be leading the discussion. The technology for this is important because the smart board will allow for the students to visually see which elements of design are important. This part of the lesson is vital in order for the rest of the lesson to happen. Row three is the part where the students will be analyzing different works of art. They will then be discussing the works of art in small groups. I will be dividing the students into their groups. In the groups there will be one student who is the “recorder” and they will be in charge of taking organized notes on a computer using Microsoft word. The fourth row will help the students get comfortable and be able to discuss emotional significance of t-shirts and clothing. They will do a question and answer with the kids in their groups. They will be asking one to two questions each. They will be taking down the information on the computer in word as well. Identify is the fifth row on my matrix. This is a point in the class where my students will be using excel and they will be collaborating and reflecting upon each others cultures and life styles. Clothing says a lot about some people and most clothes make a statement. This is a truly reflective and important part of the lesson. Next row in the matrix is the demonstration I will be doing for my students. I will be using a computer hooked up to a smart board. The program I will use is adobe illustrator. It is important that I show kids how to use illustrator and how to manipulate the template I will provide for them. They will need to create a design and style for their very own t-shirt. Row six is my matrix is when the students will actually get to make a hands on project. They will be creating a t-shirt. This row is the time, technology, and standards that will be used in order for the student to design a t-shirt. This is cool because not only are students learning art but they are also learning design. This row is when students gain freedom to what as they please with this project. The next row is for the students to be able to critique. This row is vital to almost all art lessons. This lesson have a critique because the students need to see what their class mates created after the discussions they all had together. Not only is it important that they just see what they did but they must tell each other if they would wear it why or why not. This row will be using a smart board. That is how we will show all the works. We will critique one at a time. Having students critique is not just about like and dislike but, they must also discuss the technical part of clothing. The main points would be would you wear it, what type of people are you aiming for. Questions such as those should be answered.
I see this project as so important because we all wear clothes and we shop at certain stores for a reason. This project could potentially help someone realize they should be designing clothes. This lesson plan is great and the matrix helped me break it down to make sure every part will work out and be done for a reason. Lesson plans that can not be broken down sometimes have useless parts within them. This matrix will help explain all parts of the lesson.  This lesson plan was the perfect candidate for the technology integration because it will allow students to use technology to make something, and it will show them the practicality to these programs on the computer.

Integrating Technology Dance and Art

This blog will be all about my journey through the art of dance. Although I am not a dance major many of my art projects project the idea of movement and dance. I have found a new world of art within my hula hoop and I am in the process of making a ceramic project that connects with my love for hoop dance and flow. It is important that I let my students know how I connect all aspects of art and technology. My hula hoop that I use is an LED hula and has given me so much to do with multiple art projects. For example exposure in photography and this ceramics project I am working on now. This technology of the LED hoop has opened a new world for me. I want to have students understand there is a way to connect themselves with art and technology. LED hoops are fairly new meanwhile the hoop has been around since the early 1970's. Hula hooping has become a passion of mine and I can connect it with my other passion of ceramics. This is important because students must see how we as educators connect our lives with out careers. Below are some photos I took of myself hooping.

The Potential of Clothing

As in many of my other blog posts I have spoken about how important it is to be able to create designs and be able to make money with art. Students need to learn from school that there is potential in everything they do. They just need to find the proper audience and consumers. We all wear clothing and many people see clothes as an outlet or a way to express themselves. I know I express myself through clothes. There are so many different clothes for all different occasions. This means there is a market for all the occasions clothing. There are a ton of different designers and markets. Personally I would love to be a shoe designer. My job as a teacher to to open the students eyes to see what they can do. For me I see shoes as an outlet and an expression of ones self. Also when I wear awesome shoes I feel great about myself. When I was younger I did not see a possibility to become a shoe designer and that is what I want to avoid as a teacher having a student say oh I can do that! They need to understand they literally can do anything. There is this great site on the computer that I found about a year ago. It is all about clothing and without technology we would never have it. This is a great way to show students how to use technology for their future. The website will be linked in below. Hopefully a student will be able to see the large market for clothing and be able to realize their dreams can come true!

Nail Art

Being an art major it is sometimes hard to sit and think about how you are going to make money in the future. I see my job as a teacher to not only help students learn about art but I want to give them the ability to take their strong point/concentration and make them the best at it and make them money with it. It is important for students to know how they can use their craft in the real world. As an example I will be discussing nail art and how there is a market for it. Nail art has been up and coming in the past few years. Nail art or 3D nails is a demanding craft now. I have personally found nail art through the internet and various social media sites. Once again the internet has come in handy for artists. 3D nail art consists of the powder used to create acrylic tips and is used in a decorative form. As of now it is rather difficult to find nail salons that specialize in this type of miniature works of art. I am glad to say I live in the metro area and have found a few nail salons that are good at this technique. In the next year or so I can see many nail salons creating 3D works of nail art. As a teacher, I will inspire children to take their craft and make them money with it. It is important that students see the business potential and value in their works of art.

Mini Paint Timeline

Since the early years of humans painting and recording stories have been around. From cave men up until now the idea of painting has changed drastically. It is important that everyones understands that cave mens depiction is a version of painting. Since then painting has come a long way. Paint has been around for so long throughout American history. Watercolor dates back to the time of the cave men, then there is oil paint which can be dated back to 1430 and most recently around 1940 acrylic paint was created. These are not the only 3 kinds of paint but they are the most important. Painting is not my concentration but it is important to understand this is how we know what happened in the 1400's, 1500's and so forth. Painting has evolved greatly over the years. Technology has been able to change paint because we can now synthetically create paint to make it last longer and become cheaper for consumers. Being that I was born in the late 1900's I have a choice of so many different types of paint. I do see this as a problem though because I should have tried to use oil paint because it is a piece of art history but I have not tried it and I have only used acrylics. I feel as though anyone who takes a painting class should have the opportunity to test it out. People have used oil paint for so long so it is important to see what it is like.

Collaboration Canvas

I have remixed the Hamlet Canvas on PLAY. I thought it would be a great idea to get art students involved with making sets for plays. In high school I had to make a set for a play and thought it was a great opportunity. I enjoy when art can be presented in real life jobs others than being an artist. The process of remixing this canvas was frustrating because there were so many boxes that it would get distorted every time I moved something. The hardest part for me was coming up with an idea of how to relate it to anyones canvas. In the canvas I remixed I added how to create a background/set for a play. Soliloquies are nothing without a dramatic place to be told in. I added the idea that the set is just as important as the story being told. This play will forever be remembered and the set should be as well. I also added the idea that a student doesn't have to become and artist but could potentially work for a large company making art in the style of backgrounds. This gives real life example of how someone can get an awesome job by making sets for plays!

Technology and Graphic Design

Throughout time technology has changed. It has had a huge impact on graphic design. For a while graphic design was on a huge rise. At this time it has calmed down and there are not so many job opening for it. Around 2000 computers took over the graphic design world. Ads went form being hand drawn to being made on the computer; this was a drastic change. Back in the 80's people who worked for ad agencies would have to sit and draw out each different ad they wanted to pitch to their client. This was very time consuming and would also be a very tedious job. Having one copy of something is also very risky, no one would let that happen these days. Having to draw ever add over again for just a little change in lettering or over whelming amounts of time. Thanks to Adobe we can now save files under different names and be able to change little things and pitch it to clients and show them many different options without taking the long drawn out personal time to do separate drawings. Graphic design has truly helped the media move along. It was like jumping 10 feet forward. Drawing out ads is very risky because if they get ruined there is only one way to get them back and that is to start from scratch. For example in the movie Pursuit of Happyness Will smith works for an ad agency and has to draw his ads. This takes a lot of time and one night his son in the movie spills a drink all over the table and ruins all his hard work. With computers and Adobe it is now so much easier of a process. We all have technology to thank.

Unit Plan Canvas

Creating my canvas started out slow but once I started to understand the website a bit more it became more fun and easy to use. While creating my canvas I have found some great videos and links that I have even learned a few things from about Ancient Egypt. I can see how this would be helpful for students to refer back to. This canvas is a briefing of what the entire unit will be on. This is important because a student needs to know what is going on in the unit before it begins. Every student has the right to know what is coming in the future.
My unit plan is on Ancient Egypt. This will give the students the ability to not only work on art projects about Egypt but it will also allow for time for them to research and watch videos on Egypt. This lesson plan will open students up to art history, history, technology in art and hands on art projects. This lesson plan is to help students better understand Egypt. By the end of the unit they should be able to give at least three reasons as to why Egypt is important.

Microscope Photography

Technology has and always will have an impact on art. When I was browsing the internet a few years ago I found an awesome video of a man doing photography art with paint, a microscope, a tripod and camera. This video made me realize I can use many different technologies for art. The world of art has been opened up by all different technologies. The idea of microscopes and cameras for photo art amazed me a I hope to inspire others as well. I also would love to show my students that it is totally okay for them to think way outside the box and give it is try. If they fail them we can rethink how to get the results they want. It is always important to try!
In art it is important to always think out side of the box. Using third party tools that wouldn’t normally be used for art is always a great idea. This will enhance the art. This was not the only time I saw a microscope being used for art. When I was at the natural history museum in NYC I was looking at these beautiful art photos. I began to read the blurb on the wall and realized it is photography through a microscope of different types of moths. Within nature itself there is so much art. I can see art almost everywhere in nature. I find myself connecting a lot to nature. Bugs such as moths have fantastic patterns and when photographed close up it is just an amazing experience. Unfortunately for us who would like to work with photos and microscopes it is still rather expensive but hopefully like all technology as time goes on the price will eventually drop.

Technology in Architecture

Technology is changing art. Technology has had an impact on the art of architecture. I consider architecture to be one of the most interesting forms of art. Some may put it in a separate category but, to me it is an artist designing a living space. Prior to computers architects would have to draw everything that they would even consider making a model of. Now there are many programs that architects can use so they don't have to draw out all the information. Some examples of great programs are ArchiCAD, Punch software, SketchUp, Revit Architecture, and softplan. Many architect artists will always use the pencil which is one of the greatest technology. Using a pencil to hash out ideas is always the best to get the ball rolling. The technology of the computer is great help to architects. These programs allow artist to get the measurements and what not down. Having a program to help is a big time saver. Not only does it save time but they also allow to put multiple ideas down for one room or different options for the roof. That is very helpful where as when you have a pencil and graphing paper you can not show your client all the information. The programs for architects are also great because it enables people to put the land size down and all the great information about the plot for the house. Not only are these programs great for getting an idea for the outside of the house but they also do floor plans and some even go as far as furniture to let the client see and understand how it would look. These programs are so fantastic and technology is the reason they all exist.

Art Sales and the Internet

Etsy is one amazing site for people such as myself. Art is not always easy to sell but with technology many artists have found the internet to be an outlet of sales. Etsy is a site where anyone who has internet can buy and sell goods, it is not only limited to art. Although there are many sites where someone can buy and sell. Etsy is known more for their artsy items. I personally have ordered so many hand made objects form this site. For example I have a pair of pants, a necklace wrap and many more art items made from people all over the place. It is up to the person if they want to go international or not. This site is a favorite one of mine because it is personal. When someone goes to buy something it opens a chat for you where you can instant message the seller. This site is an important technology to artists because it opens up a new world for a person to get their art out in the world. Im sure there are people who are not fond of this site but it is a great way for artist to get a kick start. It is also good because a higher artist could see someones work and contact them. This technology is important for school kids to know because it can open a vast amount of opportunities for students. Man y art students will work on their own art outside of school if they have time and money in order to do so. This is important because the kids need to know the options they have to make money while gaining and education. The main thing is that students get their work out in the world, get feed back and keep in contact with other artists who can help them in the future. Throughout my teaching I hope to open students up to many different online art sites. It helps broaden their ideas and defiantly will help their future art work. I find it important for teachers to help their students see opportunities for their future and teach them how they can make money off the subject.

Technology & Pedagogy

I chose this lesson plan because it is important to bring history into art. There are classes called art history but, it is less hands on and more about slide shows and information than creation. As it is I personally find art history boring.  For me it is better to have a hands on project about history in art. Egyptians have amazing works of art from their funeral ceremonies to the great pyramids. I personally have a love for Ancient Egypt and would hope this information would be portrayed to my students throughout the lesson.
There were gaps between the curriculum and the NJ standards. The lesson did not give enough information to the students about the history of Egypt. The students need to be taught information before using it. The teacher should allow the students on computers to get them to do some research so they can learn and look up information on their own using a web browser. The main technology that was missing in the lesson plan was a computer. The computer is so amazing and has a great deal of information and pictures from all over. The internet is a great place to find pictures from other people who have traveled the world to places we cannot see. It is amazing what you can see form other peoples vacations.
Something that would help students out is printouts of pictures from Ancient Egypt. The lesson plan does state that the teacher would normally hand out papers on hieroglyphics and what not. The computer would help get the students to meet the NJCCCS code 1.1.8.D.1. Having the students learn more about Ancient Egypt would give them the ability to look at art and discuss about the mummification they have personally made. Also it would enable the student to then be slightly cultured in the world of Egypt.

Youtube's impact on Art

Youtube is a large influence in all of our lives. Weather you watch youtube or are on youtube it will change your perspective on certain ideas. Youtube challenges the way we see things and come up with different ideas. Generally people will think of youtube as a comically site but, I personally use it to get great ideas from different artists all around the world. Youtube has made it possible for stop motion to become back in style in a sense. Stop motion is when you make a scene with action figures or clay figures that an artist has made by hand. In order to make a stop motion you have to move the figure little by little and take pictures along the way. At the end when you have about 1000 plus photos you link them all together to become a 6second or so clip. I find this art form very cool. It is time consuming and gets a point across in as little as seconds. Youtube has done a fabulous thing for artists, it has made it so that artists can use an old technology to do art again and a new technology to get their art out into the world. The Video linked below is an amazing stop motion done by some students. This is not a stop motion with action figures but real people. It gets a point across but it does take a few minutes. This is a stop motion that most likely took these guys quite a while to make. There were probably thousands of pictures taken in order to create it. It is a good example of stop motion because it does use the human as a type of performance art. Youtube is a great technology and especially fort aspiring artists.

Technology in Photography

Since the first photograph in 1827 cameras and photography have come a long way. Technology is always changing. Photographs are so important in our culture and have been for a while. Photographs used to be just for family portraits or for remembering times if the past. Photography now is a whole new world. Photos are used to portray emotion time and much more.
Our culture uses photos for so many different reasons. We use photos to describe a story, a person, or a time in the past.  As photography progressed through time it has been used for more purposes. Photos are used as a art form now. This is for two reasons, our minds are more open to new art and the manipulation of photos has changed so much. The manipulation of photos has progressed because of computers and computer programs.  Without the progression of cameras and computers it is not likely that family photos would be known as an art form.  Thus why photos can be considered art now that there are many different styles of photography.  The manipulation of photos with the computer allows photos to be art. Having a computer to change photos makes it an art form. Not only did computers change the game for photos but then the photo programs to follow had a large impact, such as Adobe. Adobe is such an amazing editing program that is has changed photography for personal use and commercial use.  Businesses such as ad agencies use photo programs all the time.  It is important to understand how many people and places actually use Adobe.  It changes normal things into an art form. As an artist having a basic understanding of Adobe programs is important.  It will allow a person to make a portfolio which is truly important.  Photos are important for all artists.
I personally use photos in ever day life. It is so engrained in our culture to remember a certain time or to capture the moment. We have phones with cameras in them so we can always have a device that captures time.  Technology has had a huge effect on photos and the way we see things.  Photos are used on a daily basis and help people understand a period of time. The progression of photography has changed our world and some people don't even know it.

Technology Autobiography

The three most influential communications of technologies that have been in my life are Facebook, Etsy, and Phantasy Tour. Technology has opened many doors for people but, it also has disabled some people from moving forward.
Facebook is my number one communications of technology because it has enabled me to join a new world. I cannot count how many great people and opportunities has arrived because of my networking on Facebook. Not only has it enabled me to keep in touch with people that I know from my past but it has allowed me to meet great people as well. I am part of many groups on this site. One group I take part in in called Black Milk East Coast. This is a group of people who have brought many clothes from a small australian business. We have helped the company become huge. It feels great to be able to help a small company, for many reasons. It helps me realize if I ever want to help my students or myself I can do it via social media. I have also had classes that made Facebook groups and this helped me and other class mates to talk and share ideas. I plan to use some type of social media such as this in my class. One downside to Facebook is that everyones information is out there. There is no protection for personal information. When we sign up for these websites we all check off the box without reading and it is not okay. There needs to be an understanding from everyone that whatever goes on the internet is up there for the world to see.
Etsy is second on my list of communications technology because it has opened up many artists to a new way of getting there pieces out into the world. For people like me who are working and go to school it is very hard to work street fairs and events such as that. Etsy allows me to purchase other peoples art and give them a chance. It helps get art out all over the world. There are negatives to everything and one big problem with Etsy is that people can steal ideas. I know from taking many art classes that my teachers say it okay to rip off ideas. It is okay to use the technique but not the exact idea.
Phantasy Tour is another communications site that I use, it is also known as PT. This is a forum in which people communicate about certain jam bands. The forum helps people do ride share, make new friends, and discuss about shows. This is not something that I could tell students to use but it has opened my friendships up to people cross country. Many people who follow the events are dedicated and will go to as many events as possible. There have been times when I have helped people out and given them rides to shows and also booking flights. This site has allowed me to go to colorado with people meet on the forum. I have not had any negative experience on this site thus far. I know not everyone is in it for the good and there could be some potential problems. Socially this has opened me up into a new world and it allows me to see the good in people who are making friendships with people in the same interest area. This site allows me to also feel comfortable at shows and venus in which I am not familiar. It is always nice to see a similar face. Without this site I would have missed out on many experiences.
There are many pros and cons of the internet and social media. Fortunately I have had fantastic experiences so far. Social media has been very helpful to my life. Social media is very important and needs to be taught inside the classroom. Students need to learn to use it as a tool instead of something that can destroy them. Communications technologies have opened my life up to some great times. It also truly helps for anyone who is trying to get there name out there or start a business, or even help one.

Profile

My name is Melissa Shea, I am twenty one years old and I am currently attending Montclair State University as an art education major.  I have spent all of my life in New Jersey and i'm excited to see where my future takes me.  Teaching has always been a passion of mine every since my childhood.  Throughout my years in school i have found that learning does not come easy to me.  As a teacher I will encourage students to pursue their dreams.  One important point that will be instilled in my classroom is always keep trying.  Students give up to quickly they need to be pushed until they get the results they are happy with.
