Technology in Photography

Since the first photograph in 1827 cameras and photography have come a long way. Technology is always changing. Photographs are so important in our culture and have been for a while. Photographs used to be just for family portraits or for remembering times if the past. Photography now is a whole new world. Photos are used to portray emotion time and much more.
Our culture uses photos for so many different reasons. We use photos to describe a story, a person, or a time in the past.  As photography progressed through time it has been used for more purposes. Photos are used as a art form now. This is for two reasons, our minds are more open to new art and the manipulation of photos has changed so much. The manipulation of photos has progressed because of computers and computer programs.  Without the progression of cameras and computers it is not likely that family photos would be known as an art form.  Thus why photos can be considered art now that there are many different styles of photography.  The manipulation of photos with the computer allows photos to be art. Having a computer to change photos makes it an art form. Not only did computers change the game for photos but then the photo programs to follow had a large impact, such as Adobe. Adobe is such an amazing editing program that is has changed photography for personal use and commercial use.  Businesses such as ad agencies use photo programs all the time.  It is important to understand how many people and places actually use Adobe.  It changes normal things into an art form. As an artist having a basic understanding of Adobe programs is important.  It will allow a person to make a portfolio which is truly important.  Photos are important for all artists.
I personally use photos in ever day life. It is so engrained in our culture to remember a certain time or to capture the moment. We have phones with cameras in them so we can always have a device that captures time.  Technology has had a huge effect on photos and the way we see things.  Photos are used on a daily basis and help people understand a period of time. The progression of photography has changed our world and some people don't even know it.

  1. It is interesting that photos are considered art now but weren't before. I don't really think that manipulation of a photo on a computer program makes a photo art. I would argue that photo's are art in themselves. The point of art is to capture an idea, a moment, a scene, and much more abstract things. If it provokes thought then shouldn't it considered art? I believe the purpose of any art is to make one think beyond face value, to feel beyond the surface of an initial emotion. I like your choice for a blog. It is definitely controversial about when photography should have started being considered art.

  2. There was always a debate about whether or not photography should be art because of its mechanical process and imitation of nature and I admit used to have been skeptical too.
It wasn’t until I took film photography that I humble myself and made me think otherwise, the film rolls as well as the paper were expensive and to develop the negatives one has to put plenty of time and precision.
Which made me think more than twice before capturing an image, because I had to understand the machine and consider all of the possible modifications and the chemistry going onto it.
What was the shutter speed going to play with the light?, the exposure?, the depth of field ?what could I burn in or out?
In my personal opinion I think that ever since the beginning of photography, photos had the potential to be qualified as art. Especially in the past, it took skill to work a film camera, nowadays with all of the technological advances the digital camera works automatically, it has become user friendly everybody can snap a picture, moreover with this new cameras the images prior to developing and discard them without spending a cent.
Not all photography deserves to be art, just as not all crafts deserve to be called art
But it is indeed changing the way in which we all perceive the world.

  3. Its so interesting how far we have come in just this 200 year span in regards to what we can do with pictures! We now have photoshop and Adobe and many other photo-altering devices. In addition, we hardly use film anymore, due the their expensive and finicky nature, everything is now digital. I'm not one to say whether this is bad or good, I really have a limited understanding of photography, however maybe a new form of photography will emerge in the upcoming years that may replace digital! Only time will tell!

  4. Great blog topic! Photos indeed have come a long way. It is so sad to hear of less photo programs in schools today (at least that’s what I have noticed). Students do not learn how to operate 35mm cameras, or never experience the dark room, and having the thrill of seeing your photo appear in the developer. I would love to argue that photography students should know how to use film in order to understand digital. But what’s the point? Even after the class is done, there’s hardly anybody who will develop film, or even fix your 35mm camera when it breaks. There are so many changes that have been happening in photography. They have been good changes though. With digital you can take more photos and you have the power to manipulate it however you want.
